We arrived during their worst snow storm that Kyoto had experienced in twenty years. The train station is only 40 metres from the hotel but having made a wrong turn, we were soaking by the time we reached the lobby. Due to the inclement weather we ate most of our meals within the hotel complex and we hung out in the cool work space adjoining their in house cafe STUMPTOWN. We also enjoyed exploring the eclectic and tasteful boutiques within the complex: BEAMS, Maison Kitsumé, Traveller’s Factory and the conceptual kokedama shop/teahouse (THIS IS) SHIZEN, which is incredible. We particularly liked the chill vibes at PIOPIKO - the laid back cocktail joint / Mexican eatery which features an epic wood beam ceiling installation. Hot tip it's more fun sitting in the mezzanine area than the main bar. The Italian place Mr Maurice was OK for dinner but it felt like if you weren't in one of the three window booths you were missing out as the rest of the space lacked vibes. Indoor plants, a big terrarium, some kind of sculpture or a lighting installation might help. The staff were young and very friendly. There is no dedicated concierge, so the quality of help you receive is contingent upon the staff member's English skills. On one occasion we asked a Japanese lady to book us a taxi, she told us to 'get a Didi', and explained the concept of 'share ride apps'. Yet on our second last day a trilingual Spanish staff member basically organised our entire outing, called a taxi and explained our trip to the driver; she was very helpful. We booked a Double Room in the Historic Building. This room design is so clever and so much fun, that I would describe staying here as one of my favourite hotel experiences. The first two sections of this large room were cave like but as you walk into the main bedroom your spirits lift as the ceiling rises to a height of six metres. The arched window with super long curtains looks monumental. We enjoyed using the lounge room / study that becomes its own room if you drop the black cane blinds that are suspended above each double bed. It felt cosier having a separate lounge room. We stayed in nine hotels during our six week Epic Trip Across Japan. This was the most aesthetically pleasing room and also the most comfortable. The bed was the cushiest by far. Everywhere you looked in the room there were fun details that clicked. Some highlights: -the sink in the toilet was perversely deep and dome shaped -the cabinetry in the bathroom was like a cool puzzle -the light fixtures seemed like they were from an old telephone exchange -the ceramic soap dishes with random children's drawings I feel like not everyone would appreciate this heavy commitment to quirkiness but if you have a creative sensibility there are many things to love about this hotel.
