Viceroy Durham Reviews
Super charming local restaurant with insanely good service
Super charming local restaurant with insanely good service and food. Highly recommended for a dinner with friends, colleagues, or a date night. I dined with my boss while in town for work and absolutely loved everything about the experience. The restaurant's vibe is chic and trendy while being upscale with a comfortable, casual feel. We ordered the cauliflower appetizer (I don't remember the name, but you'll know when you see it/the staff will know if you ask for it) and it couldn't have been better. I'm a vegan so you don't have to take my word for it when I say that it had a "meaty" texture, but it was certainly far better than what you'd typically expect from a cauliflower based dish (my boss also said it was meaty and he's an omnivore). I had the Chana masala with a medium spice level for my main course, and it was perfection. The basmati rice it was served with was perfectly cooked and fluffy and paired perfectly with the dish. Oh, they have a great selections of wines as well. I went with an orange wine that was described as a bit funky. It was fabulous and paired very well with the food. Overall, I had an amazing experience at Viceroy and highly recommend it!
Indian Fusion is a thing.
Go here and find out. Cool scene. Cool food. I sat at the bar and had a great meal and drinks. Try the Red Curry Seafood dish with naan.

WOW. Okay so I think this might be my favorite Indian restaurant. I came here for dinner by myself and sat the bar. I got the butter chicken, naan, and rice. This was such a phenomenal meal and I wish it was socially acceptable to lick my plate. The sauce was creamy and perfect. The naan was cooked to perfection. I met the owner and he was such a nice person. I will be coming back to try the lamb like the owner had told me to!
HOLISTICALLY INCOMPETENT.
We called ahead to talk through an allergy restriction and noted it on the reservation. We arrived and were seated. The waitress took our order understanding the allergy restriction. Drinks arrive. THIRTY minutes into this experience the "manager" comes to the table and informs us that the "chef" REFUSED to make a meal. We have tickets to a show and explain we really do not have time to seek alternatives. Can't they put something together with ingredients available in the kitchen and simply seasoned (oil, salt). They refused. Never in any experience has a restaurant with or without a "chef" refused to serve any food. We leave extremely disappointed. The owner follows up by email offering to make ,it right. I respond to him agreeing to give it a try, and he never responds. A competitor down the street made our day. The "chef", manager, and owner should be embarrassed for this handling of a situation.
I sat at the bar.
The place was pretty lively for a weeknight. I got a cocktail with chicken curry. The curry was flavorful and creamy. It wasn't too spicy but it didn't bother me. My drink was a craft gin cocktail and paired well with the curry. The curry came with rice. Since this is Durham, they also had a big beer selection.
Viceroy is AMAZING.
Best Indian food I've ever tasted. I went to visit Durham from Florida and my friend brought us here. The vibes were dark and so cool! We made a reservation because my friend said it's the best way to get a table. Once we arrive we were sat pretty quickly. Our server was so energetic and a great time. For appetizer we ordered the veggie samosa, Jeera Wings & Lamb Lollipops. We decided to share some entrees so we got the chicken vindaloo and the lamb Korma. Both were medium spicy and the perfect amount of spicy. For drinks I don't remember the name but it was a ginger gin mule and super tasty. I highly recommend checking them out if you're around and can snag a reservation!
My friend chose this restaurant for his birthday dinner, we
My friend chose this restaurant for his birthday dinner, we had a party of four. I was the only "first timer" of the group. I loved the decor/atmosphere the second I walked in the door. The host and server were both pleasant, engaging and attentive. I scoped out the menu prior to coming and as silly as it sounds I was so excited to try the garlic naan as I had very limited knowledge of the cuisine. I was a bit concerned about how spicy everything might. I had the red Thai seafood curry. It was supposed to be mild but it had some kick to it. The shrimp and mahi were good though. I also was able to have taste of the sausage roll which was decent, and also sampled the mykamwala paneer. My friends did share that the spice levels are not always consistent and I found this statement true bc the paneer was supposed to be spicy and my mild sauce was much more intense. As anticipated, I loved the garlic naan. I have to give a shout out for the sign about human trafficking in the bathroom(in both English and Spanish), sadly these are real issues that need attention in my opinion! Thanks for a great dining experience, I will be back!
The food was absolutely terrific.
Not being really familiar with their fare our wonderful server guided us through appetizers and main dishes. Desert was equally well considered and delicious. Will return for sure.
Favorite restaurant!
This is my favorite restaurant! The food is excellent and always tastes the same, never varies in taste or quality! The staff is very friendly and I have made friends with many of them. They ALWAYS make me feel welcome. The bartenders have cool stuff all the time. Very creative. The ambiance is very easy. You can feel comfortable there. The owner and head chef travel to India yearly to source spices for the dishes ... that is authentic Indian!

Food is soooo good.
The portions are perfect and the service is exceptional. We asked our waitress for recommendations and she did not disappoint.
The food is amazing.
I especially loved the lamb lollipops. Our waitress was incredibly amazing but the maître d' was especially rude and unaccommodating.
Delightful and Well-Run Indian
This is excellent Indian and service. We had cauliflower, tandoori mushrooms, and a spinach/mustard green curry with paneer-all of which we would order again. We were promptly seated and Kayla, the waitress, was delightful. I also really enjoyed my lime mocktail. This place knows how to season their food!
We had a nice dinner in Viceroy.
We particularly liked the ambience and decoration of the restaurant. It is an elegant place where you can enjoy Indian food. The food itself was pretty good, we especially loved the butter chicken. It was kind of heavy though but that is personal preference. The only dish we didn't like was the dessert. The cake was indifferent to say the least. Overall, a nice restaurant for groups or date night.
Consistently delightful and memorable
The Viceroy gets my #1 of the best restaurant in the immediate downtown centre of Durham. The decor and ambience are reminiscent of what one might find in London; the service absolutely top shelf; and the food out of this world without melting your credit card. The crew here makes you feel so welcome, and they go out of their way to explain dishes and insure satisfaction.
This place was absolutely amazing.
Not only were the food and drinks perfect, the service was impeccable. Word to the wise, the food leans on the spicy side, which we love, and just wanted to share in case that is helpful. 10/10 would recommend.
Fantastic Service (thanks KI C for explaining and advising
Fantastic Service (thanks KI C for explaining and advising well). and delicious authentic Indian flavors. Agree that the lamb chops, Punjabi curry ( with chicken), and naan were great .. I would add that the vegetable samosas were also perfectly executed. Even the rice was so flavorful. Kudos to the chef and the hard working staff. Will definitely go back--want to try many other dishes on the menu. Also Pleasantly surprised at the manageable noise level.
The food was great.
Medium is spicy 1 1/2 peppers. A Mello atmosphere, quick friendly service.
A British style pub with Indian fare.
The ambience is good - with dark wood paneling giving a nice feel and the service is prompt. Try to make a reservation if you want to avoid long waits. The food doesn't disappoint- the lamb chops are to die for. They have a good selection for meat dishes but not so much for vegetarian options. Will be going again for sure. Updated with a higher rating. Been there a few more times. The food continues to tingle the taste buds - outstanding flavors for all the dishes.
This was a great place for date night.
The ambiance is pretty cool and the food was great! Our server was very attentive and made some good recommendations.
Very nice food and service
Really nice place. Sat at the bar. Good service. Nice prices for a nice menu. All food was incredible and really tasty. A place to remember. Best with reservation.
Great Indian food in downtown Durham.
Great spot for excellent Indian food. The restaurant is located in downtown Durham - parking could be an issue but we found a good spot. The restaurant does very good business so reservations are highly recommended. The food was great! Amazing flavors and the curry flavor is just right - not overwhelming as in some other places I have eaten. Nice selection of beer and wine as well. And our server was excellent!!
Very good, but with one important and irritating FLAW!!
5 Family members went to celebrate a couple of our birthdays. We were seated at 7:15 for our 7:15 reservation. The food was Excellent, The wait staff very good, we were loving it. At 8:55 just as we had ordered a 3rd round of drinks we were informed by the hostess in not the friendliest of manners that we needed to leave the restaurant by 9:00 as there was a sign by the door informing patrons of a 90 minute window to experience your meal. No one in our party noticed the sign near the door on the way in. And we were not informed of the 90 minute limit by the website, the hostess, or the waitstaff. Had we been told in advance of the limit we would have gladly complied. So much about Viceroy was wonderful, unfortunately that over-site is not really acceptable. Our visit was less than 5 star, i gave it 3 stars. Leaving an important piece of information like that to chance? I sent a letter to the manager, hopefully i will hear back from them.
