Tempura Kondo Chuo City Reviews
Incredible tempura restaurant, just be ready for a LOT of food
Wow, the food is incredible here - I've been to a few tempura specialty places in Tokyo and this one is the best. My one warning to you - it is a LOT of food, especially if you order their most premium package of courses. I might suggest doing one of the smaller ones - we didn't know how to judge the amount of food, so just ordered the one with the most courses and frankly left a lot of food uneaten, which is a shame given the amount of care and work they put into preparing the food.
Greasy, Bland, Boring
The first red flag was when I entered the elevator to Tempura Kondo. The restaurant is on the 9th floor, and I could smell the grease as soon as the elevator doors opened on the ground floor. It only got worse once I was in the restaurant. The same batter is used for everything, and the only seasonings throughout the entire meal were salt, a slice of lemon, and a basic tempura dipping sauce. Every single item I was served dripped grease. It was the worst meal I had during 5 weeks of traveling in Japan, and by far the most expensive. It is incomprehensible that this place has 2 Michelin stars. When I got back to my hotel room after the meal I had to wash my blouse in the sink because it reeked of grease.
Worth visiting!
The price was on the higher side, but the tempura here was really great. Iโd say itโs worthy of Michelin star! On top of that, the atmosphere inside the restaurant was fantastic. Totally worth the visit!
The perfect tempura
Kondo has truly perfected the art of tempura. Light batter gives rise to perfectly steamed fish and vegetables. Hardly any taste of batter or oil. The prawns are so fresh they are pulled from a water tank behind the kitchen. Make sure you ask for the main room where Kondo himself cooks your tempura.
Not Michelin worthy
Itโs difficult to believe this is a Michelin 2 star restaurant. Iโm now seriously wondering about the integrity of the Michelin ranking. Most of the tempura was greasy and soggy. My neighborhood Japanese restaurant can do better. What a disappointment. The only 2 star about this restaurant is their price.
I do strongly recommend this restaurant
The carrot and sweet potato tempura was delicious and had a delightful crunchiness. I do strongly recommend this restaurant. The service was friendly and welcoming.
Delicious tempura!
Amazing! Delicious tempura and wonderful to watch the master at work. A warning though...we ordered the largest menu ( figured we might never be there again). It was way, way too much food. It also meant that the food was coming at us much too quickly. But it really was terrific, lovely light batter and no taste of greasiness at all. Spectacular ingredients...never seen such big fat asparagus stalks before and the fish was deliciously fresh. We're still debating what were our favourites and the plus of ordering the too large menu is that we had an amazing range of vegetables and fish. Fruit at the end (not tempura!) was fantastic too. Make a reservation well in advance and enjoy!
Excellent Dinner
My wife and I had dinner here. We were a little skeptical when we arrived as we were seated at the โforeigners counterโ with two young chefs in the back of the restaurant while locals were seated at a counter in the front of the restaurant. The skepticism didnโt seem merited as the food was excellent. It was very lightly battered and really highlighted the natural flavor of the vegetables and seafood. I didnโt have anything that was soggy. They have 3 different set price menus and the sweet potato is an add-on. They also offer vegetarian options. We had the mid-priced option with the sweet potato and were quite full. Service was very good and the atmosphere is informal. I wore a sport coat and was overdressed. A lot of diners wore denim including jean jackets. No need to dress up. It didnโt strike me as a Michelin 2 star restaurant but I liked it a great deal. If you want to sample high-end tempura this is likely the best place to go in Tokyo.
It is just not crispy and light like what others said.
We virtually had no idea why people rapped about this restaurant as food is oily and not pleasant. We ordered โYomogiโ set, it comes with pre-courses of appetizers and sashimi, then Tempura and so on; the only dishes we like are the the pre-courses not the tempuras, how ironic!! The tempuras are oily and non crispy, we needed to order several cups of cold tea to rinse the grease out as we felt quite disgusted halfway; the tea is not even top-up. We werenโt served by Master Kondo as his table was for certain clienteles. Not quite sure if it would improve if he was the one cooked for us. Anyway we ended up spending nearly 90,000 yen (around $1000 AUD) for 3 people, it was just so not worth it.
