My new favorite in Chicago
Dined here at the suggestion of my partners two adult kids who just returned from a trip to Croatia. I wasn't expecting such a fabulous and unique dinner when I looked at the menu. I was unfamiliar with Croatian food - the menu looked similar to Italian cuisine. This place far exceeded my expectations. The favorites around the table (we shared all the dishes) were the cauliflower, the gnocchi, and the endive salad. We also had the cevapi and the octopus. Both were very tasty but a bit overcooked which detracted from the experience. Still, with the quality of service, and the funky room (to me it was 80's fern bar meets cookbook library) I felt like this place deserved a high rating and a return visit. Yes it's expensive for what feels like a casual restaurant - but I think well worth it.

We were celebrating our 40th anniversary and there was no better choice as an Italian and Croatian to enjoy a meal mixed with our heritage. We enjoyed our experience , our waiter was attentive, the courses were paced well and the drinks were perfection.

We had been wanting to try Rose Mary for a long time but it’s a tough reservation to get. I was intrigued by the menu and the somewhat unique cuisine because it reminded me of a great Istrian restaurant in San Franciso called Albonia that closed a few years ago. We found an early reservation on a Sunday and so went with the kids for my wife’s birthday dinner. We started with the heirloom tomato salad and the garlic was so strong (and I am Italian) that is was burning my mouth. A bit disappointing. We also ordered the green beans and the cucumbers. The green beans were good but the cucumbers were outstanding - one of our best dishes. The kids got the bucatini pomodoro and the cacio pepe (without the pepe). My son loved the bucatini, the sauce was very mild, almost like a vodka sauce. The cacio pepe was way too heavy, more like an alfredo sauce than a cacio pepe. we split the beef cheek gnocchi and they were also outstanding. The octopus was a bit forgettable. A bit mushy and the potatoes were a bit undercooked for my taste. Our last dish (we over ordered) was the swordfish. It was a nice piece of fish and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, someone slipped with the salt and it was super salty. However, on any given day, I feel like this could be a great dish. Another reviewer also commented about the 4% surcharge. It was on the bill with no explanation. I asked what it was for and there was a bit of confusion but some comments about inflation, etc. The issue with the surcharge is that on top of the insane 10 1/4 city sales tax, the 4% surcharge and tip, our $250 food bill ended up costing $340. We liked the restaurant and will probably be back, maybe just ordering a little differently.
Be the first to ReplyNeed to drop the service charge
Food was good but didn’t like the 4% service charge slipped into the bill. They should raise their prices and not resort to this tactic, hoping to make 4% more and have people not notice
Be the first to ReplySpectacular food and service, but beware of the decibels
Since enjoying a dinner served family style to a big group in a (semi) private room at Rose Mary's I have been telling anyone who'll listen that the food there is the best I have had in the US since Chez Panisse in Berkeley. It was spectacular. The flavors were interesting and fresh. Not necessarily "fancy." For example, one of the best dishes we had was a simple pea risotto. It actually tasted like just-shelled sweet peas. The other vegetables, the lamb, the fish, the gelatos for dessert, all were stellar. The Croatian wine, delicious. The service, attentive, thoughtful and friendly. My only criticism -- and it is a serious one -- is that the restaurant is way too loud. We had to shout to make conversation. There must be a way to organize a space so it feels lively, without endangering everyone's hearing. Noise should not detract from the pleasure of such excellent food and service.

Our dining experience at this place was absolutely superb! Last week, we had dinner here and were blown away by the phenomenal food and wine. I highly recommend this place to anyone seeking a remarkable culinary experience. Additionally, our server was wonderful, adding to the overall enjoyment of the evening.
Be the first to ReplyBeing asked to wrap things up due to next resy being ready to be seated
A restaurant with a lot of hype. Nice menu and service initially seemed to be good. However as it came time to order dessert (1 hour 45 min after we were seated) we were informed that they needed to turn over our table to the next resy. This clearly changed the level of enjoyment for our entire table. The server then came back and informed us we did not need to rush/leave. About 15 min later, the hostess told us to wrap things up because they were waiting on our table. There are many restaurants that serve spectacular food. Service is what differentiates restaurants hoping to be of the highest caliber. Managing restaurant seatings should be foundational and not interfere with the level of service provided. Rose Mary fell very short of this mark.

It was a delight! From all the restaurants we visited in Chicago this was by far the best! We have ordered the tuna crudo, the zucchini fritters, the radiatore ‘cacio e pepe’ and ice cream as dessert. Every single dish was incredibly delicious! We enjoyed every minute of our visit. Seeing the chefs preparing the meals in front of you makes you mouthwater instantly! Staff was extremely friendly and did everything to make us feel at ease. This is a culinary must-stop when you visit Chicago.

Fantastic experience, exceptional, thoughtful food. Great staff! Sat at bar and neighboring folks were sharing plates and stories—it was a party! Loved it.
Be the first to ReplyAdriatic drinking food at its best
I'm not sure what the term "Adriatic drinking food" has to do with the menu at Rose Mary, the spit-and-polish restaurant at 932 West Fulton in Chicago's bustling and historic Fulton Market District, in the West Loop neighborhood, but if owner/chef Joe Flamm uses it to describe his Italian/Croatian cuisine, well...it's good enough for me. Open from 5 to 10 Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 11 on Friday and Saturday, Rose Mary (the names of Flamm's two grandmothers) serves creative dishes in an industrial chic restaurant with a bar. It features whitewashed brick walls, honey colored oak millwork, pale stone surfaces and accents of red clay and deep, azure blue tilework. Best of all, it features Branzino on the menu, my new favorite fish dish, a Mediterranean sea bass that reminds of Lake Superior whitefish. Flamm's version is a half Branzino with spring onion, fennel, ramps and agrumato. My wife was more ambitious, choosing a Croatian favorite, Burek Soparnik, one of the most popular items on the menu, a Croatian Swiss chard pie with dough filled with beef, onion, parmesan, mozzarella and rich gravy in a pastry. We started with baby bibb lettuce with radish, farro and buttermilk kajonak. For dessert, we shared a couple of creative Croatian sweets, palacinke or apple, toffee and vanilla gelato, and chocolate and honey madarica with chocolate cream, honey mascarpone cream, rum soaked biscuit, crispy chocolate crunch and chocolate gelato. Love the chocolate. In case you haven't noticed, and we hadn't until now, the Fulton Market District is emerging as one of the most popular go-to restaurant destinations in Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyNice breeze of croatian cousine in distant USA
As a croatian I found whole concept of the restaurant somehow refreshing and interesting, especially in terms of the croatian "traditional" dishes served there. Traditional, but conceptually brought to next level. Staff and ambient are really exquisite. I can only recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWaitress attitude takes this from a 4.5 to a 3
This is the 3rd time I have dined at Rose Mary. Honestly the food is very good. But I-have ZERO patience for a haughty millennial ( Jackie S). We were there for a happy- occasion- - wanted to eat some good food- have a few drinks- and move on. Jackie might not like her job- but news flash as a former waitress- politeness gets tips. She still got her tip- but her general disdain ruined the vibe of the evening. I cant take away from the food at this spot- it is great- and ifyou are 20 yrs old go and enjoy it. If you are late 30s. Think twice.
Be the first to ReplyGood but very pricey
Finally got to try Rose Mary. We loved the tuna crudo; definitely the best thing we tried. The zucchini fritters were tasty but too fried for me. The tortellini were awesome and the ribs also very good. Service was good Interesting Croatian wine options. Only down side is the pricing. It’s very expensive….basically entree prices for appetizer size portions.
Be the first to ReplyCreative menu, hip vibe
Excellent new creative addition to an already world class dining city. Modern, light, hip space in West Loop area; small plates with big taste. We shared zucchini fritters, pasta with creamy pecorino sauce, veal and chicken thigh risotto, and pork ribs which are as good as the other reviews say they are. Friendly prompt service. We'll be back!

We’ve been trying for months to get a dinner reservation for Rose Mary with no success. Finally it happened, at 5:30 on a summer-like Wednesday night. We’d reserved a high-top table at the bar because it was all we could get but when we showed up, and likely because the outdoor seating was in use, the 2 of us were given a prime 4-top by the big front window. Very kind of them. We ordered a round of drinks. I liked my “Like it’s Golden” cocktail, an aquavit-based drink. It was citrus-y light and refreshing with half a candied kumquat on a pick to nibble at the end. Our waitress, Katherine, was very personable and helped us choose the correct number of dishes (4 or 5, depending on your hunger) and described her favorites. Because the food is Italian and Croatian, there were both familiar and novel dishes to consider. We chose charred Gem lettuce salad with a kajmak dressing (salty-creamy and cheesy), grilled baby octopus tentacles in a tomato-y sauce, squid ink risotto, called "crni", and pork ribs in an agrodolce sauce. Pasta courses are popular menu items and sounded very appealing but with the risotto, we thought it would be redundant. Each dish was shareable for 2, tasty and attractively plated with some unfamiliar ingredients. The runner who brought them described each one for us. We left nothing on the plates and still made room for dessert, a fig toffee “zolten”, reminiscent of a sticky toffee pudding topped with vanilla gelato. Some menu items change seasonally, others have been on the menu since the place first opened. Service is friendly and competent (well, except for the 3 receptionists, who are unsmiling with a bit of “attitude”). The menu is accessible with a QR code but they’ll give you a paper menu if you ask. We were given clean plates and cutlery between each course. There was a full water bottle on the table and it also was replaced when needed. Katherine checked in with us after each dish appeared to make sure we were happy with it. The space is fairly large and well-lit, on a street corner with windows on 2 sides. It’s nicely decorated with high, sound absorbing ceilings, green plants (including a sad-looking potted rosemary shrub near the entrance), light-colored wood furniture and an open kitchen. Our table had a beautiful veined-marble top; there were no tablecloths. There were at least a dozen outside tables with umbrellas for good weather. The patrons were mostly young professionals, dressed casually but well. We noticed one family with a toddler in a high chair and a sprinkling of gray-haired folk. Dinner for two, including a surprise 4% surcharge “to help offset increased operational costs resulting from the COVID crisis” and tax but before tip was $135. Having had so much trouble getting in, we expected to find it over-hyped and disappointing. Happily, this was not so. We enjoyed ourselves, the food and the relaxed ambience. Note for those interested in going: At 5:30 the place was almost full. There was a lull around 6:30 with tables emptying and another influx between 7 and 7:30. That’s about when we left. The best strategy may be to get there when it opens without a reservation and hang out at the bar until a table opens up. It might be a long wait, though; we noticed several tables lingering over their meals and wine and the staff content to let them do so.

Excellent food and cocktails. Vegetable tortellini was the best thing we ate this year! Save room for dessert - table favorites on the gelato/sorbetto menu were lemon whey and pistachio. Cute atmosphere but hanging plants did interfere a bit with the table seating.
Be the first to ReplyVery good food but very bad cocktails
The food here, described as Italian Croatian did not taste at all Italian. Whatever its origin, the food is very good, as is the service, and the premises are very attractive. The cocktails are served in ludicrously small glasses and, even then, are about 80% filled. I cannot think of any restaurant which serves such stingy cocktails, Prices for alcohol are normal meaning one is paying full price for less than 1/2 a drink,

We recently visited Rose Mary for a weekday, double date with a couple of our friends. It took months to get a reservation as this place was very popular, so we were happy when we were able to get the reservation. This place has a great ambiance inside, which was very homely nothing over the top. It created a real comfortable environment. Our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable about all their food items which was great because she was able to provide us great recommendations.
The food is intended to be shared with the table - they recommended 2-3 dishes a person. I would say, for the most part, the portion sizes were on the smaller side outside of the Meat dishes. We ordered the Fritters and Salad as our starters and found both very delicious, the salad being a little more unique. We also at the squid risotto and lamb ragu - they were both great as well. There wasn't very much lamb in the ragu and the risotto was very creamy, which I preferred. In addition, we ordered the Octopus, Pork Ribs, and the Steak. The octopus was delicious and not overly crispy. The pork ribs and steak were cooked very well. We really enjoyed the steak and was pre-cut which made it easy to share. We also ordered the sourdough bread on the side - this comes with some of their other dishes, but it was great as well.
Chicago's Best.
Excellent experience with friends. A pristine space with the food and service to back it up. I found the flavors to be well balanced and thoughtful. A high recommend for those visiting Chicago. If you can snag a reservation, keep it!
Be the first to ReplyGood service, energetic dining environment
Had a very high hope for Rose Mary but it turns out that I think food are okay.
Had a non-alcohol drink zenzero but it was full of ice that the taste was diluted.
Pasta was very good and it was probably one of the best dishes we had.
Brussels sprouts was over cooked a little bit and burned.
Great vibe!
I heard a lot of people hyping about Rose Mary. So it was on my list of places to check out in Chicago. I must say it was really chill vibe. No rush. Guests looked relaxed and enjoying their meals. We ordered 4 dishes and shared between 2 of us. Scallops was particularly good. I will visit again for sure.

Be the first to ReplyYou go Joe
Have never been a huge follower of "Top Chef" but you can tell someone is watching! The line out the door at 5:00 for dinner was a great sign as is the 3 month wait to get a restoration unless you just hit Open Table at the right time.
New build out fits the area perfectly in this "hip" space, open kitchen "bee hive" design. Really well staffed. No Covid staffing issues here. Place was alive and for good reason.
Zucchini fritters we moist and accompanied with perfect ( think Wicked) sauce blend. Beet salad was as expected ( thanks for the nuts Joe) and the eggplant tortellini was likely the best thing I have had in years. What a great dish. Not your traditional size or shape and who cares, the blend of cheese and sauce was incredible.
Roasted lamb was nicely done with a small accompaniment of potatoes and spinach to just suck up that au jus. And strangely enough with no rosemary taste it worked well.
Get online and get in line as Joe and team will be killing it in the West loop for quite some time.
This is what "Adriatic drinking food" is all about
Owner/chef Joe Flamm came with five-star credentials. If he isn't wearing a Michelin star or two, he should be. James Beard would be proud. Rose Mary is Flamm's first solo creation after working at elite restaurants such as Spiaggia in the past. Located at 932 West Fulton Market in Chicago's West Loop, east of Morgan, in the historic Fulton Market area, Rose Mary offers Italian/Croatian cuisine or Adriatic drinking food served in an industrial/chic restaurant with bar. It reflects the tradition of age-old taverns in Croatia known as Knobas with white-washed brick walls, honey-colored oak millwork, pale stone surfaces and red clay accents with deep, azure blue title work. But Flamm left the best for the last, the food. My wife and I, curious as to what Italian/Croatian cuisine is all about, started with prosciutto salad with peas, fava beans, pecorino and ricotta. For an entree, my wife chose risotto or Skradin, veal breast and chicken thigh with parmigiano and tomato. I was tempted to order the spaghetti with duck sausage, rapini, parmigiano and chili flake. But I couldn't resist the Branzino with papricka sauce, fennel and charred lemon. Branzino is a meaty, delicious Mediterranean sea bass and the Greeks seem to know how to prepare it better than anyone else. For dessert, we shared scoops of gelato (strawberry vanilla, chocolate, pistachio honey) and sorbet (lemon, cherry lime), a delightfully light but tasty finish to a first-class dinner.

Went with some friends and had some delicious dishes in an inviting space. The standouts: Cevapcici in homemade ljepine, the roasted beets, the black risotto, the ribs, Can’t wait to go back any try several more plates.
