Eating here was such a beautiful experience being Indigenous myself! The art hanging everywhere, all with their own stories, had me lingering well after I finished my meal!! The location was stunning being right by the water too and them big windows to soak it all in! Our waiter was so helpful in navigating the menu with us and explaining the dishes once served. Altogether the meal was so satisfying and soooo delicious!! I'm looking forward to my next visit yawako!!

came here with a large group for a private dinner.

5/5 by 👻 @Christina D. on 09/01/2025

When we arrived, we were brought to the private room which was downstairs. I think this space typically served as a classroom, but the desks had been re-arranged to be one large table for the group. the dinner began with an explanation of the history of the restaurant and the foods we were and were not likely to see. to start off, I had a lemon and raspberry martini. I was little disappointed by the drink because it tasted watered down and seemed to lack much flavor. but thankfully the rest of the meal made up for it! we started off with bean dip and tortilla chip which was fresh and delicious. next came the strawberry salad and meatballs. The salad was super crispy and had some delicious toppings and the meatballs were tender and paired so well with the sauce. Next came the stuffed tomatoes which had spiced rice inside as well as the bison. I didn't have much room for the stuffed tomatoes because I was pretty full at that point, but the rest of the group seemed to enjoy them. I did leave room for the bison though and this was excellent. super juicy and tender - I wish I had left more room to have more. The meal was capped off with a donut like dessert. This had an interesting texture that I don't think many in the group liked. Overall the dinner made for such a great experience, though I did find that they brought out entirely too much food for the size of our party. Thankfully the staff was mindful of this and set the food off to the side of the room so that we could package it up in to go containers at the end of our meal. This was my first experience at a Native restaurant and I'm so happy I got to try it. the food and service were excellent and I will definitely be recommending it to friends!

We waited about a month to secure a reservation that would fit our availability. The restaurant interior is modern. Parking is available on the street or nearby the bridge. We tried the charred vegetable plate, yuca fries, marichou, bison ribeye, grilled black cod, and pineapple flan. The food was unique and delicious. The bison ribeye was very tender. The yuca fries were crisp and flavorful with two choices of sauces. The flan is different than what we were expecting (we were used to the egg based yellow flan). But tasted very clean. Overall a very good and unique dining experience. You will be hard pressed to find a restaurant serving Native American cuisine.

Absolutely creative and delicious dishes! Beautiful presentations and impeccable service! We were visiting from Arizona and had an hour before going to the airport. We didn't have lunch reservations but were able to sit in the outside patio! We lucked out it was a beautiful day. We had the corn arepa with salmon and the blue bread which were both very delicious and satisfying! Can't wait to go back!

3/5 by 👻 @Laura E. on 08/30/2025

My mom saw Owamni featured on Cook's Country and made a reservation for us prior to her trip to visit me. We had a 1 pm reservation and were able to find metered parking a block away. Since we arrived early, we walked around the lake for ~10-15 mins. When we checked in, we were promptly shown our table. We got water quickly and our waitress came over shortly after. We shared the strawberry salad, corn cakes, and stuffed tomatoes. Of the 3, the corn cakes were my favorite. They came with blackberries and maple. While we liked the smokiness of the chard in the salad, as well as the other ingredients, the chard was difficult to chew. The wild rice and bean filling, as well as the tomatoes themselves, were tasty but the sauce was a bit too spicy for us. Though I just had water, my mom got the black fern and didn't love it. While we're glad we tried Owamni, we didn't love it enough to want to rush back. If someone I know really wants to go here, I would try something different and/or order the corn cakes again.

What a blessing to come here and share an experience that

5/5 by 👻 @Michael B. on 08/28/2025

What a blessing to come here and share an experience that was memorable and encouraging that our foods and souls can be nourished without the destruction that colonization has brought us. From the moment we entered, it was a different experience. Not necessarily aesthetically wise (even though the simplistic look was gorgeous) but because the space speaks to you. You enter and the hosts are there to check you in. They escort you to your seat as you pass by some happy looking people with their bellies full. Everything on the menu is intentionally designed and crafted to include precolonial food and ingredients. We ordered the following: Api Roja which has Corn Dumpling, Corn Jam and topped with Popcorn. If you had Champurrado, then it tasted quite similar to this. This was probably my favorite dish of the night. It's sweet and it tasted like home. Salmon Tartare which has Picked Onion, Huckleberry, Pickled Game Egg, Maple Vinaigrette. It came with corn tortilla chips. The huckleberry really stood out here. It balanced out the onions. This was my least favorite dish of the night. I think with everything else being so flavorful, this one felt a little bland to me. Indigenous Surf and Turf. This has Elk or Venison Strip, we went with venison because the elk was all done for the night, Lobster, Garlic Bone Marrow Butter, Slaw and Charred Jalapeño Aioli. Refried beans which has Duck Fat, Vanilla Epazote. This might have been my second favorite. It being slightly sweet was such a refreshing twist. During our meals we sipped on a sumac old fashioned which had duck fat Duck-Fat Washed Bourbon and Sumac Bitters. Which was bomb. And we had the martini which had Gin, House-Made Vermouth and Epazote We ended our night with the Three Sisters tea which has Anasazi Cave Bean, Butternut Squash, Corn Silk, Goldenrod, Cranberry, Marshmallow Root, Hydrangea Root, Cinnamon, Uva Ursi, Strawberry Leaf and Meadowsweet. It was so good that I had to ask if I could buy some and take home which they do. There's a small shop right by the front desk. Unfortunately they didn't have any in stock but they wrote down where I could get it from which is another indigenous place up north in Minnesota.

Native American food in an attractive Riverside setting.

4/5 by 👻 @heatherrobertsnz46 on 08/22/2025

Native American cuisine in an attractive Riverside setting. The restaurant came with lots of good recommendations. The food is delicious, quite different from the usual round of restaurant food. We were advised to order to share, which we did. 4 is a good number in a party as we could order a range of dishes and all get a good sample of each. We chose 2 entree size, and 3 appetisers ,and each took home boxes. So there was more than enough food. Menu changes so dishes I recommend might not be there later. The duck is excellent, the tomatillos not so much - rather sour. Sweet potatoes and yucca chips very good, though would suggest not ordering 2 carbohydrates. Excellent coffee.

3/5 by 👻 @Ziyan C. on 08/15/2025

We got last minute reservations here online a day in advance for a Saturday 8pm dinner for 8 people in August. Really beautiful space. Parking was not too bad on the surrounding streets, although easier on 1st St than Great River Rd. Our server insisted we get two orders of the Sweet Potatoes, but that was a huge dish and really unnecessary; it was the only items we had leftovers of. Smoky pineapple cocktail was VERY smoky but good. People enjoyed their teas; they were very earthy and true to their descriptions. After saying multiple times that the starters would come out quickly, when our roasted vegetables didn't come out 1 hour and 15 minutes into our meal (after all of our other food had come out) and we asked to cancel the dish, our server made an excuse that the dish does normally take a long time but sure no problem he'd cancel it. It was pretty clear that he had just forgotten it, and it would have been fine if he had just admitted that. Our favorites were the Cod, I thought the duck was decent. The bone marrow was a bit of a let down. Cost was $423.67 for dinner for 10 people.

Honest opinion alert.

1/5 by 👻 @Zhesi C. on 08/14/2025

The selling point is indigenous food and you rarely see it in US, the only thing I had before was Indian taco from the state fair. I had really high expectations. Red corn soup with corn dumplings: not bad, which has popcorn and corn dumplings(corn flour dough), more like a porridge Strawberry salad: dandelion green with vinaigrette dressing. The dandelion greens were cooked and bitter, the vinaigrette didn't remove all the bitterness. Double-boiled dandelion has no bitterness even without vinaigrette, I am not sure if the dish is intended to be somewhat bitter. Strawberries are alright, not fresh. Sweet potatoes with chili aioli: this is the best dish. The sweet white potatoes were baked and then grilled, dipping in the chili aioli, which is a creative dish. Very common sweet potato in South America. Venison surf and turf: venison and lobster were overcooked, not expecting that from a dish that is $100, lol. Bone marrow butter and sauce is good. Wild rice: not good, not seasoned well and really dry. You want a good wild rice? Machine Shed in Iowa, the best I have ever tried, like Michelin stars restaurant level. I am not sure if I suppose to compare pre-colonial and post colonial food here. Sweet potatoes chocolate pudding: this one is thick like porridge, which tastes really weird, not chocolate nor sweet potatoes, this combo doesn't taste right for me. Price: about $230 for two people, the restaurant advertises for eliminating ingredients introduced through colonization, I see butter, cocktail, utensils and modern cooking all over. Not sure it will live up this concept. It is an experience to try the indigenous food, but I will not return as a foodie standpoint, the food is ok and overpriced. At least I don't expect overcooked meat/lobster. Any culture has good food, I tried it once and know what it is. Good enough, concepts can get you so far. Please focus on improving the basic minimum: not overcooked. Service was great. We saw one Asian waitress took care of 4 -5 tables, I was not sure if she was the only waitress, but she took care of 1/4 of the tables in the restaurant and super busy. Ambience: 5/5 Food: 1/5 Price: 2/5 Service: 5/5

I had never been to a Native American restaurant before. So was really happy to have this opportunity. Beautiful, light filled and natural wood interior design. Our server was very helpful and friendly. My friend and I shared the charred vegetable plate with the vegetables grilled so perfectly accompanied with a delicious pesto. Bean dip and lobster was good. I really enjoyed the red corn soup. And we had the sweet potato chocolate pudding for dessert. No refined sugar or dairy is used in the recipes, food tastes earthy. Oh and my hot tea was excellent.

Be prepared for a unique dining expereince

5/5 by 👻 @Kirk on 05/15/2025

I'd missed getting in here the prior time I was in town a year ago and had to go this time. I appreciate restaurants with an unapologetic vision and this is about as unapologetic as they get. Food is Native and there are rather severe limitations placed on allowed ingredients because of that. In skilled hands, such limitations are an asset and that was definitely the case here. Dining alone, selecting an appropriate sized meal was a little difficult as the plates seemed to be either quite small, or built for sharing. I ended up with a collection of small plates which allowed for lots of tastes and turned out to be a good way to go. Everything was excellent. Flavors could be described as plain with more "earth" (not necessarily earthy, I'd say "rustic" or "homey" but those terms feel off) flavors being used. It seems like that has turned other diners off, but showcasing the flavor of mushrooms or beans which are simply well-prepared is not a bad thing (go watch Ratatouille). As a beer guy, I also really appreciated the off-the-beaten path (local) beer list which paired well. My only criticism is that service was a little fast, but I was right at the end of the night and was ordering a lot of plates, so they probably needed to keep me moving. Overall, if you stumbled in here, you probably wouldn't like it. However, if you go looking for a unique experience, you will probably have a great time.

Unique indigenous food

5/5 by 👻 @Aslan's Traveler on 04/30/2025

We had stellar service and enjoyed every dish we tried! Don't go expecting to find anything you've had before on the menu. All dishes are made with indigenous foods, no dairy, beef, eggs, etc., but they are all so tasty. We planned to share six dishes, but our server told us that with what we'd chosen we only needed five and pointed out which were similar enough that we could pass on one. All three of our party agreed we couldn't decide on a favorite; they were all so good. Being a carnivore, I liked the rabbit, duck and smoked trout, but the sweet potatoes were good too. The maple beans were good, but not that unique, so unless you really like beans, I'd recommend trying something else. The restaurant has a modern look with indigenous artwork. If you can, ask for a seat near the window, where you can look out over St. Anthony falls and the Mississippi.

We loved everything about our meal at Owamni. The dining room was beautiful, the service friendly, and - most importantly - the food outstanding. If you go in expecting to be educated and surprised, you'll find that the food becomes more than the sum of its parts - each element of each dish combining to elevate everything on the plate. We particularly enjoyed the bean dip and the mushroom papusa, both of which blew our expectations out of the water. The flavors may feel atypical at first, but with the restaurant's mission in mind, that feels like it's the point. We did not have any of the issues others have mentioned, re: service or leaving hungry (we were, in fact, stuffed when we left), and we can't recommend Owamni strongly enough.

My daughter was visiting from Arizona and wanted to have lunch here prior to her flight back home. I was also eager to dine here since first hearing about it. So on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 we made a reservation for 11:45 AM, table for four. I would recommend not arriving without a reservation as this place is very popular. When we arrived it was not yet busy, but did fill up completely by 12:30. My wife and I each had a glass of Arao Carmenere (red wine), my daughter and here boyfriend had beers. The menu here is divided into: Plant (based), Share Plates and Sweet (desserts). All items are also written in the Dakota language. All items on the menu are "non-colonial". This means that they have no chicken, beef, pork, dairy or cane sugar. All ingredients are modern indigenous foods; corn, beans, wild game, birds, fish and native plants. They celebrate the diversity of Turtle Island (planet Earth). The 4 of us shared 4 different plates; Duck, Roast Squash, Sweet Potatoes, and Elk Poyha. They were completely out of the Smoked Rack Of Elk, or we would have tried that. All of these plates were so exquisitely prepared and so delicious. We then shared desserts of Blue Bread and berry Cobbler. We had such a great time, enjoying the view through the large windows overlooking the Mississippi River and downtown Minneapolis. This restaurant is located on the top level of the Waterworks Park Pavilion. We want to come back when we can enjoy the outdoor patio. Very highly recommended.

It was truly incredible to taste new flavors I've never had before along with dishes that tasted like perfection. The rotating menu of Indigenous food all sounded delicious (including the teas and desserts), and it was hard to just pick a few for our meal. Some particular standouts to me were the (very generous portion of) grilled sweet potato. These char-grilled sweet potato wedges were so flavorful, and the ample chili oil they added on top were a delicious touch. I also loved the bison taco--it was braised so well, and then the sweet, fruit sauce paired so nicely with the gaminess of the bison meat. Our server was also very kind and walked us through the menu before we ordered. The views of the Mississippi River from the restaurant were also very nice and relaxing, which rounded out a great meal. Definitely come to Owamni if you have a chance! The food was very expensive but very good. We wished there would have been information available about the food. For example the sweet potato was white, not yellow. Why? Was it a variety that was heirloom? Was it wild sweet potato? Was it a variety specifically used by the Sioux? There was nothing on the menu about it and the wait staff did not know. All of the dishes it was the that way. So it was a very nice experience, but we left with no additional knowledge about the Sioux food culture.

We think this may be the top restaurant we've ever been! Wow. This is a one of a kind place providing a decolonized food selection and a menu in English and Dakota online that changes seasonally. I do recommend you make reservations 2+ weeks in advance to get an ideal time, but otherwise walk up and lunch times are very open it seemed. Reservations may place you at a "community table" so you may share a table with another couple. We saw a range of dress but mainly casual and some formal. As for the food, it is very hard to narrow down. We thought 4 dishes (2 plant and 2 game) was the perfect amount. The trout and bean dip still has my mouth watering, so definitely get that. The squash is super filling. The elk skewers were perfectly grilled. The corn taco was sweet. At the end a charge a bit above 10% is added to help pay waiters/waitresses well. You can still tip and we liked that we knew this beforehand and appreciate that they do this. We would love to be back in another season!

After reading the menu, full of locally sourced unusual fare, four of us agreed to eat family style so we could sample more dishes. Corn chowder, carrot tartar, pickles, and sweet potatoes came out first, followed by smoked bison and gumbo. To be honest, the main seasonings were vinegar and hot peppers. We were assured the "heat" was adjusted to Minnesota tastes. They lied. Our mouths were aflame before we got to the smoked bison, which was the highlight of our meal. The desserts were flavorless. They even made crickets taste good!

5/5 by 👻 @wyattearp220 on 06/22/2024

We celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary at Owamni, after dropping off our daughter at summer camp. The setting is lovely, the food was delicious and the staff bent over backward to ensure we were comfortable and had a nice time. We loved the location by the river, overlooking the falls. I insisted on ordering the crickets, and even my reluctant husband enjoyed them. Such a great night!

great concept, but some drawbacks

3/5 by 👻 @Galilayo79 on 05/28/2024

I wish there was a 3 1/2 star rating. Best things: -unique experience -kind servers -delicious bison taco Less than great: -rushed plates. Came out so fast, there really wasn't time to properly enjoy. I felt they were trying to turn the table as quickly as possible. -portion size was really small for the price, especially the elk entree (just six smaller bites of elk for $38) I am glad that I tried Owamni; I sincerely appreciate the concept and the attention it is getting. I just felt it was quite pricey and rushed.

A Unique, Well Curated and Delicious Dining Experience

5/5 by 👻 @HenryAbott on 05/16/2024

Not to show off but I’ve eaten at some of the finest restaurants around the world, laden with Michelin stars and I honestly believe this a e can hold its own with most of them. Why? Well the concept behind the place goes a very long way, it chimes well with modern concerns and at the same time celebrates previously undervalued cultural cuisine. But that would be a mere gimmick if not backed up with exceptional cooking and it is indeed exceptional. It is perhaps the unique ingredients and their masterful pairings that elevate most of the dishes to the very highest standard. For example in Europe a tartare of beef is often paired with pickled veg to cut through the richness of the meat but here, blue berries were used to wonderful effect. Crucially a vegetarian can also get a grand meal here and because no colonial ingredients are used, those with gluten or diary intolerances can have a meal of a life time. Which is what I did. I simply cannot recommend this restaurant enough for a unique and stimulating culinary experience.

Delicious Offerings but Pricey

3/5 by 👻 @CrusinCrew on 05/15/2024

We all agree that the items we chose were prepared well and had fantastic flavor. However, the portions are on the small side and they add a 13% service fee (which is noted on their webpage). Definitely worth the experience if you love to have dining adventures but I doubt I'd go back.

This restaurant is amazing. Beautiful views, attentive staff, excellent food. We had wild rice, bison and elk tacos, duck breast, and squash custard. The duck was honestly the best I’ve ever eaten. I highly recommend eating here.

Never again

2/5 by 👻 @Fabien C on 04/17/2024

My family recently ate at Owamni, in Minneapolis. We had been trying to have a table for a long time, and were very excited. Our reservation was for the last shift, at 7:30 pm. We arrived at 7:35. The first item on the menu of 13 items was a tea that was distributed in the hallway, while we still had our coats on. The second, smoked berries on a tostada the size of quarter, was served on a plater while we were entering the room. When we arrived at our table, the third was already on the table and the fourth, a corn soup, arrived about two minutes later, starting to create a confusion of plates on our table. We ordered the wine pairing, but it only added to the confusion: what was supposed to go with what? I asked the waitress to stop bringing plates to the table to give us a chance to focus on one dish and quietly enjoy it but it never happened. A waisted evening just because of the crazy rush. Chef Sean Sherman had left out of his restaurant the most important of native ingredients: hospitality, conviviality.

Wait a little before tossing the leftovers!

4/5 by 👻 @Janice D on 04/10/2024

The lunch we ordered was delicious without a doubt. I was not able to finish the Sweet Potato Maple Chili Crisp at the price of $15. I asked for a go box and boxed up the leftovers. As many people do, I forgot to pick up the box upon leaving. I wasn't gone any more than 5 minutes, or less, and remembered my box. I went back in the restaurant, and was told that they had thrown away my box. I was surprised by the response, and thought how wasteful, a restaurant that prides itself on conserving water, and serving a unique and healthy food that should never be thrown away. The leftovers were perfectly good, and only touched by a serving spoon, and about half of the whole order was left. A very good lunch ended with a not so good impression. I realize many people do not come back for a forgotten box of food, but what about those of us who do?

We were warmly greeted for our lunch reservation and

4/5 by 👻 @Michael W. on 03/19/2024

We were warmly greeted for our lunch reservation and quickly seated. Our server gave us a quick explanation of the menu and left to get our cocktails and water. Upon her return. We ordered the cricket and seed mix(quite tasty) and the red cliff lake trout + white bean spread(so good you could spread it on a flip flop and eat it). We followed this up with the tartare( again excellent the pickled mushrooms were a great addition to the dish) and the corn taco (good, but we felt an order should have 2). We ended with the the blue corn mush(this seemed a little like a wet bread pudding and could have used a little texture and the stuffed poblanos which was a little pricey at $30, but when the plate came it seemed fair as it was two large stuffed peppers...it was a huge entree and just fabulous. All in all very good, it was just so hyped up before we went it seemed like it didn't live uo to expectations and it is a fabulous concept.

4/5 by 👻 @Shannon O. on 03/16/2024

This restaurant is in beautiful location and the atmosphere is great. Our server didn't know anything about the actual spring menu items as she said this was her first day back after being gone a month. We were not very adventurous with what we tried but what we had was good. Was it worth the high prices, I would say no? Was it good and somewhere to try, yes.

The food had a unique blend of flavors that I never tasted

5/5 by 👻 @Travis T. on 03/11/2024

The food had a unique blend of flavors that I never tasted before such as elk that is corn-crusted and served with garlic squash aioli. Also, the squash custard served with meringue and bison fat caramel adds an elevated touch to a flan-like dessert. The tea was also pretty good. However, it was pretty expensive but that is to be expected with fine dining. The inside is nice and modern.

If you google this place, lots of articles will come up describing how the entire restaurant honors the native people who originally lived on the land the restaurant is on. Server attentive and super knowledgeable. Every dish was superb. Interior is understated but beautiful with a view of the river and bridge. Go if you can!

Owamni is a unique restaurant that everyone should try at

5/5 by 👻 @Jackie B. on 02/13/2024

Owamni is a unique restaurant that everyone should try at least once. Not only will you enjoy delicious food, you will be immersed into a cultural and learning experience. Owamni only uses foods native to the area during the different seasons. The service is incredible. Each time we have gone the servers are happy to answer any questions about the menu. The food comes in small plates, and we have found it best to order a few items to share. Make a reservation further in advance because spots fill up quickly. There is a pay parking lot across the street as well.

The food is terrible.

1/5 by 👻 @alexander j. on 02/11/2024

Plain and simple. Pheasant was dry as can be and the blueberries didn't make it better. Over priced to claim to be "indigenous" to the area. Doubt it. regardless. It's not good. Zero flavor. Service was what you expect from a high end and reputable restaurant. Parking is non-existent. Good luck. The view is the best part. I can't believe it won beat restaurant in MN. Weird.
