Kisumé Melbourne Reviews
Disappointment Regarding Reservation Cancellation
Dear Kisume Management, We are writing to express our disappointment with the recent experience we had with your restaurant. We had made a reservation one month in advance, and within a week of the reservation date, we were suddenly informed that our booking was canceled. It appears that a more profitable function took precedence over our reservation. Such treatment feels like a double standard and is highly unprofessional. We understand that events and functions can be significant for business, but it should not come at the cost of disregarding prior commitments to other customers. We had been looking forward to dining at Kisume, and this experience has left us feeling undervalued as customers. We hope you can understand our frustration and take steps to ensure that other customers do not face similar issues in the future. Good luck with your business, but please remember that customer trust and satisfaction are paramount.
A lovely experience
This is a very nice restaurant. Beautiful food, surroundings and service and a nice wine list as well. The lunch special is lovely and quite good value for the quality. We left very happy with the experience
Lovely
We stopped in (without a reservation) for a light dinner. We were seated at the counter across from the chefs. It was fun to watch these artisans at work. We had sashimi, octopus, and spicy tuna rolls. All were delicious, but the octopus was especially notable. We also had the saki flight. Loved two of the sakis. The third, a sweeter dessert wine, was ok but not a favorite. Overall a wonderful experience.
Good food, strange wait staff.
Great food. However something about the service may keep me from coming again. Too over the top, try hard, manipulative, over sharing and bordering on rude. We didn’t want the crappy French Chablis but it was easier to say yes than put up with the wait staff pantomime. Tone it down, people are coming for the food not the waiters.
Food lacking salt and quality but very salty bill.
The food was good but not to the point of justifying the price. Service and venue were perfect but the food was not worth 135 pp for a sushi/sashimi bento. Sashimi was ok but I had a few nerves not usually found in the best part of the fish fillet: chewy sashimi is a big no no. The sashimi sauce was good but lacking salt and umami: if you want to add that layer of salt, you mess up the sauce by dipping the sashimi into soy sauce. Cornelian choice… Some maki were outstanding (the meat one) but the one with “caviar”, I’m sorry but the caviar was more bland than my $5 a jar flying fish roe from China… Comments seem hard but again, when you charge $135 for 6 pieces of sashimi and 6 pieces of maki, you expect much more than that.
Fantastic but overpriced
We did the Chefs Table. It is a wonderful experience to be present for the skill displayed in front of your eyes. The food is superb and this is art to watch being made. Only issues is the hallway to all the rooms is looking tired and worn and the cost for 3 people of near $900 is hard to justify. 10/10 for the quality of this culinary experience.
Major Fail
Extremely overpriced, and the food is just average. Servings are tiny. The tempura king prawns and the hiramasa kingfish both tasted overwhelmingly of sugar. I couldn't taste any yuzu in the yuzu tuna bites. I've had much better Japanese food elsewhere, for less than half the price. Go somewhere else.
Sneaky Tricky restaurant
Still water cost $12 per head ???? I went with my family (4 adult ,2 kids)together for a dinner. When we just sat down, the server asked “sparking or still?” On spot and i said “still is fine” before open the menu. Then She filled our glass halfway through with a glass bottle of water .I didn’t think anything of it until my $600 bill included $72 worth of “still” water (x6 half glass of water @$12). I was figured still meant regular water, but they charged us for this without saying those are chargeable / they didn’t leave the bottle of still water to us at all and no refill …..Finally I still paid the bill but the whole principle of it seems super shady to me. Is this normal? Warranted by the server?
Hit and miss
Exceptional prices for some really nice dishes, but also some really average ones. Service overall was also poor. Topped it off asking for a tip for said poor service after paying $650 for a service for two.
Don’t bother
Went here on New Year’s Eve expecting a nice experience. Going on reviews for good quality food in an impressive environment. Unfortunately the service was terrible - inattentive staff, delays between courses, creative calculation of our bill. We were sorry we went.
Great space but underwhelming dinner
Really disappointing dining experience. Some dishes hit or miss. Service was slow and things we’re forgotten. It was busy but there was alot of wait staff. There was one lady that seemed to be on top of what was going on at tables in our area but some of the other staff seemed overwhelmed. We planned to keep on adding to order but we were left unattended so we decided to move on. Very expensive for what it is. And the wine prices were ridiculous.
All the pretence of grandeur but fails
Went for an anniversary lunch but left feeling disappointed; the food was average- especially the sushi for which they are rated highly. The steak on a bed of mushroom was so overly flavoured as to drown any taste, and to be given 3 different tasting sauces when the base was so overwhelming was interesting. The edamame was also heavily salted. In summary, the seasoning overwhelmed the dishes rather than enhancing the ingredients.
Divine
Kisumé is centrally located. It was Fresh, great service, creative flavors. I quite literally couldn’t fault anyone or anything I had. It’s an absolute must go to restaurant.
Dispaointing food
I booked Kisume for my partner's birthday on the assumption that we were going to be sitting down at one of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne, (3/2/23) . On arrival the restaurant looked very classy and oozed charm, we were taken downstairs which is virtually the same as upstairs. The staff were efficient although not overly personal. The service was also efficient. The food however was disappointing, especially the sashimi, both my partner and I agreed that we had been provided far better quality food at a third of the price elsewhere. We still had a nice time.
Sexiest Bar on Flinders Lane
This upstairs bar at Kisume oozes sex appeal and late night cocktails with your best friend or that sexy companion you want to impress. I had the refined yet fun Louise to myself behind the bar making me the perfect Whisky Sour backed with personalised DJ funk tunes to get you in the mood for the week on a Monday night. This was a pre dinner drop in and did not want to leave. Highly recommended to return with their full menu available upstairs also not just bespoke cocktails. Love this gem and I’ll be back.
Good food and service, limited menu and expensive
We were expecting more of Kisume. The decor is very stark and quite masculine. We went for lunch and the menu was very limited. We saw others eating oysters but were not offered them. We ordered some and they were $7.50 each! The food overall was good not great. Service was good.
(Surprisingly) great value
I confess when we saw the prices on the menu on sitting down at Kisume we had a moment of regret, mostly because we assumed we'd be broke or hungry by the end of the night. However, by the end of the first course that was no longer a concern. The size and quality of the dishes meant we were very happy with the value received and definitely not hungry at meal's end. Service was swift and courteous, the atmosphere was warm and intimate with little surrounding noise. Bench seating was very comfortable. The food was really excellent.
Don’t waste your money if you like good Japanese
Heard great things about this place, but could not be more disappointed. Food was very average. Better sashimi at IGA supermarket. Was dry and tasteless. To be fair they at least adjusted the bill, but still paid 200. Won’t be going back and won’t be recommending
Over-priced and unimpressive
I had heard such good things about this restaurant but what a let down. $68 for a 'large' main consisting of 2 small pieces of fish and nothing else! Even miso soup was $17. The sushi was no different to the sushi I can get anywhere around Melbourne but 10x the price. The service also was average and we managed to witness who we thought was the manager be-little and criticise her staff right in front of our table at the end the night. Our meal cost $340 for 3 of us and I left hungry and very disappointed. I will not return and would not recommend this restaurant. There are so many better Japanese restaurants around Melbourne.
Very Average
Food decent but for the money charged you expect exceptional. Sat down at 9pm and felt rushed by servers, suspect they wanted to clear out the top floor by 11pm. Red wine glasses different shapes which I know is a small point and plates cleared before my friend had finished which is just bad manners. For the prices charged you expect exceptional and an attention to detail
Not good enough for the price
This is not a $250 tasting menu. Food was OK but pro teppanyaki chef should not put out overdone steak. Tables too close and felt like we were being rushed through to get done by deadline, 3 dishes out of 7 the hospitality staff picked up my plates and stood over us waiting for my guest to finish his course. Breakfast service at timeout round the corner was better than this.
So many great Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. This is not one of them.
The worst dining experience ever. Extremely expensive sushi based restaurant with a very limited menu. We decided to share the wagu meat, which was lacking in flavour and not cooked to our liking. The Morton bay bug was basically tiny pieces held together with rice. We had a lovely rose. Very disappointing with a hefty price tag.
