Al Covo Venezia Reviews
Delicious dinner!
Amazing dinner at Al Covo! They managed to fit us in last minute on the terrace and it didn’t disappoint. The waiters are super friendly and helpful. Get the courgette flowers, crab pasta and the panna cotta! 😋😋 Go to this restaurant! 🤩
Don’t understand the hype!
Honestly the food was trying to reach for a white guide or michelin star. We ordered a starter, I can see how sad my salad was, it was old and basically crying. My main dish was mixed dried sea food, no flavor- I’ve had better for half the price. The waiters are the only positive memory from our dinner. Best ones and great service. If we ever came back- it wouldn’t be for the food.
Not one thing to complain about - just excellent
We were a group of four who had the tasting menu with wine pairings and there wasn’t one wrong note. Highly recommended! Will definitely visit again if there is an opportunity.
Believe the hype, Al Covo is excellent.
Possibly the best meal we had in Venice. The service and atmosphere are equivalent to the amazing food. Highly recommended.
Excellent Local Spot!
Often when traveling to Venice, one becomes enchanted by its mystery and glamour. However, when encountering the throngs of tourists who descend from cruise ships each afternoon, that illusion quickly disappears. So where should a more sophisticated traveler go to escape the numerous mediocre osterias and trattorias? Al Covo, for sure! Located just a few blocks from St. Mark's Square, away from the busy waterfront, Al Coco serves as an oasis. Excellent local produce and fish are brought in daily. Only the freshest ingredients are used in traditional Venetian dishes. Don't be surprised if some items sell-out -- the early birds (mainly locals) know to arrive after work to "score" the delicious spider crab pasta or varieties of grilled fish. Remember to load up sides such as artichokes and beans, which come from Al Covo's garden. Service is warm and inviting, making you want to return on your next visit to Venice.
An unexpected disappointment
We have been to Al Covo on several occasions before and have always loved it. Our experience last night was quite different. There is a much reduced menu with starters the same price as the main courses - around Euros 35.00! The food was OK but nothing very special. The service was friendly and good but we’re not sure that this restaurant will be on our must go-to when we next come back to Venice. We feel very sad about this.
Extraordinary
Since many years I got to know this extraordinary place. Back then, it was a well kept secret. Only locals eating here...Time passed and it became famous because the of the food, the service, the professional attention and every detail is taken care of. The owner is there to greet the guests. It is a wonderful place. Reserve with months in advance!
Hidden Oasis in Venice
Small, cozy place and everything we ate was delicious. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Hidden oasis in Venice that felt like eating in someone's home.

WHAT. A. MEAL! Tucked into the dreamy streets of Venice, this restaurant is quite the culinary experience. Our waiter, sommelier & attendant were ever present, ready & willing to accommodate. We ordered the fried artichokes, beef cheeks & wild duck. Each course better than the next. On our way out, we had the lovely opportunity to speak to the owner & his wife about how they made the duck so dang tasty! The entire experience was dreamy!
So disappointing !
So so disappointed!! Supposed to be highlight for Ruby Wedding weekend !! Overhyped … lots of choices not available - even Humous ( how difficult is that to make!!) Ambience is great but food basic and so over priced !! Don't bother !! At these prices better to go to Trattoria al Gatto Nero on Burano - Angela H was spot on with that one!! Tell Maximillan the Scouser sent you!!
Not bad, not great - mostly overpriced
We came for dinner, and left rather disappointed. The staff is courteous, and attentive, but the food lacks flavor and inspiration. For the price we would have expected a bit more. We ordered fish for €30+ and got a bone with a small handful of meat attached. Or slice of cheesecake for €14. This would be fine if the quality or taste was there, but neither dishes were culinary highlights. Venice is expensive, it’s true, but value for money here is limited. Would come back if the food improved because the ambience is cozy.
Amazing wine, dessert with a story
I chose this restaurant for my first trip in Venice because it is family-owned and I am so happy because it turned out to be a great choice. Went straight to the main with the brilliant cuttlefish stew, close with the traditional dessert and espresso and this was such a pleasant closure with the orange - tangerine tastes. Will come back
This farm to table restaurant delivers! I had the milk fed
This farm to table restaurant delivers! I had the milk fed lamb which was delicious. I've not had lamb quite that tasty and it was absolutely based on the quality of the ingredients. The spider crab appetizer was unique and light. My husband ordered the fried seafood platter which may have stolen the show. I will be back next time I am in Venice!
Portions are too small
Extremely reduced menu and although the food quality was good, the portions were way too small. It was quiet and the service was exceptional. The waiter spoke English and Spanish quite well.
Venice….the hidden gems to eat in!
We booked Al COVO after seeing Angela Hartnett’s Venice trip on the TV. We had an amazing time at the restaurant; the ambience was great, a really help waiter who tried to apologise for his poor English (in perfect English!) Food was delicious, the first 2 courses are now on my list of things to cook at home for date night with the wife as they were so good. Sommelier helped with my choice of Venetian Red (only drink quality local stuff when abroad) and the meal was ended with the most perfect Vanilla Gelato served by the owner, Diane (I realise my limitations and I cannot make Italian ice cream with home made liquorish sauce so sadly not on my date menu at home!) Thoroughly recommend the experience to anyone in Venice. High quality food, really pleasant atmosphere and lovely to wear a tie and jacket in a restaurant and not feel out of place as all the locals are dressed up in their finery.
Not worth the hype. Dine elsewhere.
I saw this restaurant on a tv show and was incredibly excited to visit. I was left disappointed. Everything we ate was good, I cannot fault the food it was better than average (though I wouldn’t say incredible). The service however was one of the worst we have had. Everything took a very long time, when seated it was 20+ minutes to get water, we weren’t given help with the menu, for example waited till ordering time to hear specials then had to ask for some more time. Limited guidance o. How much to order or what things come with. The price point is quite high, I don’t mind this but at this price you expect better and more prompt service. We waited 40 minutes between courses. Similar to other reviewers portions were small. The skewer was 9 small pieces of seafood for 35 Euro, it did not come with anything. The Prosecco was 10 euro a glass, not especially nice and the pour was 100ml - a little stingy. Whilst not the worst meal we have had we left a bit drained and flat as it took forever and was a meal we were looking forward to. I would give this a miss.
Once..and done
Have wanted to try Al Covo for years, we finally went last month. And were incredibly disappointed with the food. Heavy and pretty bland. Thinking maybe the chef was off or had an off night? Service was friendly though we felt we were rushed out of there: salad, appetiser and main course took us a speedy hour.
This restaurant needs a professional chef because whoever
This restaurant needs a professional chef because whoever is preparing the food doesn't know anything and the presentation of the dishes is horrible. I ordered a carpaccio and it came with mayonnaise in the center, no arrucula salad, nothing. I've never seen this and I'm the daughter of Italians and this restaurant in Venice doesn't make sense, it doesn't have anything Italian about it. I think the food is prepared and frozen. Simply horrible, not worth what they charge. The waiter is super arrogant and the service is also horrible. Very disappointed and very expensive for horrible food and service . Zero stars.
Great service and atmosphere.
The food was great, we had special pasta and the fried sea food main. It was the best calamari I've ever had.
This place was just delightful.
Only just tucked away from the hubbub of the crowds, this restaurant is easily accessible and still gives you a quaint, cozy feel while you dine there al fresco. The service was exquisite and the food was absolutely delicious.
Al Covo was given a top recommendation by some friends I
Al Covo was given a top recommendation by some friends I trust. I was planning to visit Venice and made an Al Covo visit a priority for my party during our two night stay. Unfortunately, we did not have the experience we hoped to have. While the atmosphere was nice (we ate on the patio on a warm evening), the food was good, but not exceptional. Service was very uneven throughout as well. To elaborate, the menu suggested more classic, simple preparations and that is what we received. However, only one or two of the dishes (from appetizers to entrees to sides) ordered amongst eight of us jumped out as outstanding. One that did jump out was the seasonal squash blossoms stuffed with ricotta -- the fresh flavors of the squash blossoms coupled with the cheese came through very well. They were cooked delicately and very well. The other dish that was simple and tasty was their tagliolini with spider crab and roe. Again, simple dish with great ingredients and good flavors! Other dishes we had included a tuna carpaccio special, their prawns catch of the day, a swordfish catch of the day, Adriatic sole with artichokes, and a fresh vegetable side (zucchini, potatoes, peppers). These dishes were unfortunately "mid" (just okay) and less than memorable for a five-star restaurant with Michelin recognition. The prices of the dishes were as-expected for a high-end restaurant with a solid reputation -- the value just wasn't close to there for us this night. On the service side, we had one outstanding server who was charming, witty and attentive and another (sommelier?) who provided wine list guidance that did not have the same approach and seemed to do the bare minimum. I asked for a good local white wine to pair with a couple of the dishes we ordered (tagliolini with spider crab, Adriatic sole and prawns special). I was immediately offered a Soave from the list -- interestingly, it was the lowest-priced offer from their white wine list. Interested in something that might be a step or two up in quality, I asked about the more mid-priced wines on his list. He offered the next Soave (same label) and wasn't really willing to talk about the higher priced varietals on his list or ask any questions about what I drink or like to drink -- really odd for a sommelier. I ended up getting a single vineyard wine from the same vintner as the one he originally recommended. Unfortunately, that wine was not very good -- I would have preferred to spend 2x as much to get a better wine. It was also odd to us that our silver was not changed between courses. Our server took our clearly used silver from our appetizer plates and placed them back on our settings. Not the biggest deal, but not what I'd expect from a high-end place like this. Lastly, we made specific reference to food allergies in our party as requested at the time of our reservation. Our servers had no knowledge of this and were accommodating to these by pointing out the allergen notes in the menu (very well done), but we were told we had to stick to what worked in the menu -- no further accommodations could be made by the kitchen. This ended up being very limiting to the member of our party who had dairy, nuts and shellfish allergies. I wanted to cast this off to a bad day for the restaurant, but our sample size was pretty large and we had a far superior dining experience elsewhere in Venice for far less than the cost of Al Covo. I know others have had better experiences, but I will prefer to explore the many other great places in Venice before considering coming back.
We had a wonderful dinner at Al Covo in May.
We were able to eat outside which was very pleasant although missed the interior ambiance! Our server was fairly attentive but also enjoyed some food delivery and fun discussion with the owner. She was delightful!
Al covo was the highlight of our trip to Italy.
The service was impeccable and the servers were very knowledgeable about all of the dishes and made good recommendations. The restaurant was beautiful! We had the tomato pasta with burata and pork schnitzel and both were perfectly done. Even the timing of the service was amazing and elegant. The homemade Venetian chocolate and hazelnut gelato was Devine and I am still thinking about it.
Great food and service.
One of the best restaurants in Venice. Menu focuses on local ingredients and the chefs highlight the local produce and seafood.
Al Covo is amazing!
This restaurant deserves all of the stars! It was one of the highlights of our visit to Italy. The staff is highly professional and the owners are warm and inviting. The food is absolutely superb. We had several courses, drinks, wine and desserts. Every single aspect of our lunch was excellent.
Good service Best calamari I've ever had!!! FRESH and
Good service Best calamari I've ever had!!! FRESH and amazing Of course the environment was amazing as well, LOOK WHERE YOU ARE haha Nice people Would definitely come back here to eat again when I'm in that part of Italy ! Food was amazing all of it and loved the bread
Nice meal with great service.
More a 4.5 stars. Wonderful place to start our holiday. Service was kind and impeccable. We felt very welcomed and our servers were thoughtful and considerate of our needs. We also enjoyed our meals. It was fresh and well prepared although it was not quite a super wow culinary experience. But it was very very good nevertheless. A bit off the heavier trafficked spots in Venice which is nice.
Honeymoon
Lovely atmosphere, attentive Crew and fresh products. We were able to secure a last minute table and we didn't regret our visit!
Wonderful dinner experience
My wife and daughter and I had dinner here on December 9, 2022, at the suggestion of Sandro, the sommelier at The Gritti Palace hotel. I immediately recognized the restaurant from the Netflix show, Somebody Feed Phil. What a treat! The food, ambiance and staff were outstanding, and graciously laughed at my corny "Phil jokes." I was greeted and bid good evening by the owners, such nice people.
Lovely staff and great food
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We shared the soft shell crab to start and I had the monkfish kebab for main, both were great.
Found an absolute gem
Managed to get a late slot for lunch at Al Covo. Everything was fabulous. Beautiful setting. Staff very friendly and attentive. Venetian water glasses, huge beautiful linen napkins, attention to details on cutlery china etc. Very smart and friendly waiters. We had razor clams and crab for starters, very plentiful, crab was beautifully presented on a silver stand. Bread selection was delicious. Main had seafood skewers and a fabulous vegetable selection. Chocolate pudding was delicious. We asked the Wine Waiter for a recommendation and it was spot on, a local wine. A throughly delightful luncheon. Even though we were one of last in for the luncheon service they never rushed us. Had a lovely chat with the owners on our way out. Loved her linen apron. The following night we went to Osteria alle Testiere. some of the staff at al Covo said we were in for a special night, sadly Osteria alle Testiere didn’t come anywhere near Al Covo. If we get back to Venice Al Covo will definitely be on my list to book, thank you so much for making out luncheon very special.
Need reservations! When we arrived they had to turn away
